U.S. Soldiers to Leave Iraq After Almost 20 Years

U.S. soldiers will leave their last bases in Iraq by Sept. 30, 2026, closing almost 20 years of having troops there. A few hundred U.S. helpers will remain in the north at Erbil airbase to help an international team fighting ISIL, a violent armed group. Iraq's leaders say ties with the U.S. will now center on business and trade.
