Nepal mourns 1,380 dead from glacier-collapse flood; over 5,500 still missing

Nepal observed a national day of mourning on 7 September 2026, with flags at half-mast, for at least 1,380 people killed when a glacier collapsed into a river on the Nepal-Tibet border on 26 August. Over 5,500 remain missing 13 days on. Rescue operations at 12 hydropower sites continue, with teams from India, China, South Korea, and the US deployed.
