Government accepts under-16 social media ban burdens young people's political communication
The federal government accepts Australia's under-16 social media ban is an effective burden on young people's ability to communicate politically. In the High Court, Australia's highest court, it argues the burden is narrow, indirect and modest. Reddit, which is challenging the ban, submits that an account is needed to "communicate" on it. Hearings began 3 November 2026.
