Australian Engineer Robert Pether Free to Leave Iraq After Four-Year Detention

Robert Pether can finally leave Iraq after more than four years detained in Baghdad, Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed 12 October 2026. The Australian engineer was arrested in April 2021 over his company's dispute about the central bank headquarters project. Released from prison for health reasons but under a travel ban, he is now in transit.
