Pakaraka first to switch from state to charter

Pakaraka School in Northland is the first state school to become a charter school, Associate Education Minister David Seymour announced. Charter schools are publicly funded but run independently. It is now run by the Society of Holistic Learners, a charitable trust led by Pakaraka School parents, RNZ reported on 12 October 2026.
