High Court Upholds Block on Mount Pleasant Coal Expansion

Australia's High Court dismissed MACH Energy's appeal on 7 October 2026, upholding rejection of the Mount Pleasant expansion in Muswellbrook, New South Wales, in a 3-2 decision. The majority said regulators had not weighed steps to limit overseas emissions from burning the coal. The plan would have doubled output to 21 million tonnes a year through 2048.
