Australia's Top Court Says No to Bigger Coal Mine
Australia's top court rejected a bid by company MACH Energy on 7 October 2026 to expand its Mount Pleasant coal mine in Muswellbrook, New South Wales, by 3 votes to 2. Judges said officials ignored how to reduce pollution released abroad when the coal is burned. The plan would have doubled coal output to 21 million tonnes yearly until 2048.
