Suspected Pneumonic Plague Death at Siberia's Anti-Plague Institute
A worker at Siberia's Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Shelekhov died Oct. 5 of suspected pneumonic plague — the lung form that spreads person-to-person. Nearly 200 people are under medical observation, with Irkutsk hospitals under quarantine. Russia's health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor attributes it to pneumonia of unknown cause. Lab tests will determine if international notification is required.
