September jobs: 29,000 added, below yearly average
U.S. employers added 29,000 nonfarm jobs — meaning jobs outside farming — in September, below the 45,000 monthly average of the past year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Oct. 2. Unemployment stayed at 4.2%. In my view, hiring is cooling, not collapsing, which could take pressure off wages and prices.
