Switzerland's glaciers have shrunk nearly 20% in five years
Swiss glaciers lost almost a fifth of their ice in five years through 2026. Monitoring data released Oct. 1 shows a 5.5% loss in 2026 alone, the second-largest yearly drop recorded. Heat waves and light winter snow were the drivers. Early loss of snowpack — the winter snow layer that shields ice — left bare ice in summer sun.
