10-year Treasury yield tops 5.27%, a 19-year high

5.27% is where the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield topped out on Sept. 29, Reuters reported, a 19-year high. It is up nearly 50 basis points — hundredths of a percentage point — through September. I see this as the number to watch for savers and borrowers, because it tends to push up mortgages and other loan rates.
