Burnham's Plan for an NHS-Style Care Service in England

Prime Minister Andy Burnham proposed an NHS-style national care service for England. In a BBC interview with Laura Kuenssberg on 27 September 2026, he called the current system — help for elderly and disabled people — 'threadbare' and 'as unfair as American healthcare,' citing 'huge cost' to families. He warned broken social care will in the end break the NHS.
