Researchers at the University of York extracted DNA from 2,000-year-old grape seeds preserved in sealed Tuscan wells. The grapes matched varieties grown in southern France, revealing that Romans deliberately moved wine cultivars across their empire. That genetic heritage survived the empire's fall, disease, and pest infestations to reach today's vineyards.
