Ancient canoe discovery: Government must decide on dig funding

Cabinet must decide whether to pay for digging up an old double-hulled canoe on the Chatham Islands, dated to the 1400s. The Māori Land Court said the whole canoe counts as discovered, so the culture ministry must look after it and cannot delay. The ministry had said it was only responsible for 750 pieces already collected — about 10% of the canoe.
