New UK Leader Says No to Another Scottish Independence Vote

Three days after becoming prime minister on July 20, 2026, Andy Burnham met Scotland's leader John Swinney in Glasgow and ruled out a second vote on Scotland leaving the United Kingdom. A referendum lets people decide a major question by voting. Burnham said another vote would distract from fixing the economy. Swinney still wants one.
