Badenoch drops insults in first speech as Conservative leader

Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader who challenges the government, opened her first speech on 23 July 2026 by telling a London audience that new Prime Minister Andy Burnham "seems like a nice guy." She dropped earlier insults calling him a "people pleaser." A senior Conservative said she adapted because Burnham is more likable than Keir Starmer.
