Man Who Killed Minnesota Lawmaker Gets Two Life Sentences

A federal judge sentenced Vance Boelter, 59, to two life terms plus 40 years on July 23, 2026. He killed former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and shot Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette in June 2025. Boelter pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty. Prosecutors called it "an assault on democracy."
