New Jersey said a software error wrongly registered 6,600 noncitizens to vote; fewer than 400 actually voted. Trump claimed 35,152 online and 278,000 in a July 16 speech. A Guardian review of government letters found no explanation of how those numbers were reached and less certainty than Trump suggested. FactCheck.org and Deutsche Welle also questioned the claims.
