Did a Real Girl's Punishment Inspire Oliver Twist?

Historian Theresa Musgrove says an 1836 newspaper story about Alice Shepherd being punished at Hendon workhouse, a harsh shelter for poor people, sounds just like Oliver Twist being punished for asking for more. That story came before Oliver Twist started in February 1837. Musgrove thinks Shepherd may have given Dickens the idea.
