French students clash with police over crowded, run-down schools
French high-school protests turned into clashes in Rennes, Lyon and Strasbourg on Oct. 6. Students are upset over too few teachers, run-down buildings and packed classrooms. Student protesters lit fires at at least two schools. Police fired tear gas, a chemical that stings eyes and lungs, and sent special crowd-control officers. Reuters video called them the worst school protests in decades.
