New rules for overseas students

Rules to stop overseas students hopping courses started 2 October 2026, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke says. Students can't change courses in the first 12 months. Soon they'll need a fresh visa, like a new ticket, to switch. From 1 July 2027, no extra stay to change. Labor says it will curb endless temporary stays.
