Australia's student visa-hopping rules take effect

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke says rules to end student visa hopping took effect on 2 October 2026. International students cannot switch courses within 12 months, and will soon need a separate visa to transfer. From 1 July 2027, no visa extension for course changes. Labor says it will curb 'permanently temporary' migration.
