UK borrowing costs hit highest level since 1998

Britain now pays 6% interest to borrow for 30 years, a rate last seen in 1998, reached on 1 October. Like a higher mortgage rate for the government, it squeezes Chancellor John Healey before his 28 October Budget. Shifts in markets since spring are expected to have eaten at least half of his £24bn safety cushion for spending and taxes.
