Pentagon warning millions after hackers stole personnel files

Hackers stole personnel files for about 2.8 million living and nearly 300,000 deceased service members and staff, the Pentagon said. They got in through a weakness in software used to share files, like an unlocked filing cabinet, from October 2025 to mid-July 2026. The Defense Manpower Data Center, the Pentagon office that keeps personnel records, is now sending notices.
