U.S. borrowing costs hit 19-year high above 5.27%
Above 5.27% on Sept. 29, 2026, the main U.S. government 10-year borrowing rate rose nearly 50 basis points in September, Reuters reported, a 19-year high. A basis point is 0.01 percentage point — like cents on a dollar. That tends to make mortgages and business loans cost more. In my view, how fast it rose is the pressure to watch.
