Extreme Heat in the Southwest Also Means Flood Risk Nearby

A vast lid of high-pressure hot air, called a heat dome, is baking the Southwest at 110–115°F through late August 2026, affecting 45 million people. The National Weather Service warns that this same weather pattern is pulling moist air into the Rockies and Plains, triggering severe storms and sudden flash floods alongside the dangerous heat.
