Hundreds of People Pull a Giant Castle Tower Home by Hand

In Aomori, Japan, about 1,800 people pulled a 400-tonne castle tower along tracks by hand. A century-old Japanese method, called hikiya, moves whole buildings without taking them apart. The tower was moved in 2015 to fix stone walls; all 2,185 stones were restacked by December 2024. Hand-pulling runs through August; machines finish the last 73 metres. Reopening is set for 2033.
