Lebanon Ends the Death Penalty

Lebanon's parliament voted on 11 August 2026 to end the death penalty, making it the first Middle Eastern country to do so by law. Instead of execution, people convicted of serious crimes now face life in prison with hard labour. Only Hezbollah's political group opposed the change. Lebanon had stopped executions informally since 2004; 85 prisoners on death row will now be resentenced.
