Israeli police facilitate Jewish prayer at Al-Aqsa, breaking longstanding status quo

On 23 July 2026, Israeli police allowed hundreds of Israelis to pray openly, raise flags, and sing the national anthem inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem — a breach of the status quo under which Jewish prayer at the site is legally prohibited. National Security Minister Ben-Gvir, who oversees police, joined the incursion. Jordan condemned the visit.
