Los Angeles County reports first rabid raccoon since 1973

Los Angeles County health officials announced Oct. 5 an investigation of a rabies-positive raccoon found at a backyard work site in Westlake Village, the first documented case since 1973. The animal appeared ill but not aggressive. Officials said the variant is unknown but likely from a bat; testing can take weeks.
