Proposed Drax datacentre would emit almost twice Gatwick flights' CO2, NRDC says

NRDC estimates Drax's proposed 1.2GW North Yorkshire datacentre would emit 8.6 million tonnes of CO2 yearly, nearly double Gatwick's 4.79 million tonnes from flights in 2024. The figure assumes constant operation across all hours of the year and 4.9 million tonnes of wood fuel annually. Drax calls on-site power reliable, low-carbon electricity; regulators will need to reconcile conflicting carbon accounting.
