France to close up to 500 high schools amid student protests
France will fully or partially close 400-500 high schools on Monday, Education Minister Edouard Geffray announced Oct. 4, citing safety concerns. The closures follow weeks of protests over staffing, overcrowding and building conditions that began Sept. 17 near Paris. Organizers have called for large demonstrations Tuesday, leaving whether closures calm tensions an open question.
