At least 17 people, most Catholic pilgrims and mostly women, were killed October 3 in a multi-vehicle crash at Salama, about 90 kilometres southeast of Nairobi. The group was traveling overnight on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway to a prayer site in Nakuru County when their van was struck. Seven survivors were taken to hospital.
