
No one has been prosecuted for failing to enrol to vote
The Electoral Commission is not aware of anyone being prosecuted for failing to enrol to vote, Chief Electoral Officer Karl Le Quesne says, despite compulsory enrolment since 1924 in general electorates and since 1956 in Māori electorates. Enforcement would require a police prosecution in the District Court, University of Otago law professor Andrew Geddis says.
