1,453 dead, 5,500 missing after glacial-collapse flood hits Nepal-Tibet border

At least 1,453 people died when a torrent of mud, rock and water struck northern Nepal and the China-Tibet border on August 26, 2026, triggered by a glacial collapse. Nepal's disaster authority reported 5,500 still missing and 13,795 rescued. Prime Minister Balendra Shah called the flood "a warning to the world" at the UN General Assembly on September 24.
