Norway Seizes Russian Ship in Arctic to Enforce $4.22B Ukraine Arbitration Award

Norway seized the Russian-owned cruise vessel Professor Molchanov off Svalbard on 2 September 2026 after a 24-hour coast guard standoff. The seizure enforces a 2023 Hague tribunal award of $4.22 billion to Ukraine's Naftogaz for Russia's expropriation of its Crimean assets. Russia called it "piracy" and vowed to challenge the ruling. The ship had been tracked for months.
