USA Today: national reporting + the local gannett network
By USA TODAY Co. (renamed from Gannett Co., Inc., November 18, 2025)
USA Today's own national desk anchors the USA TODAY Network — hundreds of local Gannett papers reachable from the same app and login — and the publisher's own press kit claims, citing Comscore data from December 2024, the largest digital news audience in the category, excluding news aggregators. It's free to download, a real slice of articles stays free every month with no subscription required, and the app carries a 4.5-star average across roughly 242,000 US App Store ratings.
Where it falls down
The free tier is ad-funded and has run a subscription paywall since April 2021 — and paying doesn't reliably remove the ads: App Store reviews as recent as July 2026 describe an active Ad-Free subscription still showing pop-up and video ads ("I pay for AD FREE and USA TODAY inserts ads anyway," one wrote; another, paying $89 a year, called it "getting worse and worse"). Push notifications are on by default for breaking stories, and reviewers have flagged the same specific complaint since at least 2021: a notification fires for a story that turns out to be subscriber-only. Nothing here is rewritten or personalized beyond your own manual choices — it's the newsroom's homepage, not a feed you compose.
- Pick it if: You specifically want USA TODAY's own national reporting and your local Gannett paper under one login, and you don't mind paying to try to make the ads stop.
- Skip it if: You want a free feed that's actually ad-free, or you're tired of a notification turning out to be a subscription pitch.
