CBC News: live canadian broadcast news + coast-to-coast regional coverage
By Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC)
CBC is the only Canadian broadcaster with a coast-to-coast public mandate, and the app is built around that: live-streamed newscasts — The National, Canada's Nightly Newscast — run inside the app itself, alongside named regional editions for Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Halifax and Calgary. On the country's biggest news night in years, the April 2025 federal election, CBC's digital platforms logged their highest-ever traffic day: 3.5 million hours watched and 8 million unique visitors across cbc.ca and the app combined. Both CBC News and Radio-Canada Info hold Reporters Without Borders' Journalism Trust Initiative certification — the first Canadian broadcast media independently verified for it, recertified in September 2024 — and the app carries a 4.5-star average across roughly 57,000 Canadian App Store ratings.
Where it falls down
CBC isn't actually Canada's most-reached news source online — Bell Media's CTV News claims the number-one spot for digital reach two years running, 45% of Canadians monthly as of a January 2026 release citing Comscore data. CBC's own funding keeps moving under it (see Pain points, below), the app added a forced account requirement to keep reading around early 2026, and both stores' reviews describe a growing ad load through 2026 on a newsroom that's already funded by Parliament. Nothing is rewritten or shortened for you either — stories run at the newsroom's original length.
- Pick it if: You want Canada's widest live-broadcast and regional news footprint in one app, and you don't mind creating a free account to read it.
- Skip it if: You want a feed that doesn't ask you to sign in to keep reading, or a story rewritten at a level that actually fits you.
