Apple News: magazines and papers
By Apple
Nothing else bundles this much paid journalism into one subscription: Apple News+ carries more than 500 magazines, newspapers and digital publishers, professionally narrated audio versions of long features, a daily puzzles set and — since December 2023 — The Athletic's sports coverage, all shareable with family for one price. The free Today feed mixes algorithmic ranking with human editors picking Top Stories, which is a genuinely good front page, and it's rated 4.6 stars across roughly 1.6 million US App Store ratings.
Where it falls down
It exists only on Apple hardware — no Android app, no real web version, so switching phones means starting over. The free feed is ad-funded, and in February 2026 Apple was reported to be running low-quality, AI-generated "scam"-pattern ads through its Taboola native-ad deal, including fake liquidation-sale creatives — a problem paying News+ subscribers see too, since News+ doesn't remove ads. That same month, FTC chair Andrew Ferguson sent Tim Cook a letter alleging Apple News's Top Stories curation favours left-leaning outlets, citing a Media Research Center study; Apple hasn't published data confirming or refuting it. And nothing in the app is rewritten for you — stories run at the publisher's original length and register, whatever that happens to be.
- Pick it if: You're fully in the Apple ecosystem and would otherwise pay for two or more of the 500+ titles it bundles.
- Skip it if: You're on Android, want a feed that isn't ad-funded, or want a story written for you rather than reprinted.
