AP News: the original wire
By The Associated Press
AP is the original wire report: a not-for-profit cooperative owned by its own member newspapers and broadcasters, filing for the record rather than for engagement — the reporting a good many other apps in this whole comparison are quietly repackaging. It's rated 4.6 stars across roughly 359,000 US App Store ratings and 4.3 stars across roughly 145,000 Play Store ratings (both checked live, September 2026), and its reporting won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting, for a global investigation into Silicon Valley-built mass-surveillance tools.
Where it falls down
AP's own free feed runs ads now — Apple's listing says "Contains: Advertising" and Google Play's says "Contains ads," and reviewers as recent as September 2026 describe autoplaying video ads with click-bait patterns and the app freezing when they open a story. Notification settings are reported broken: reviewers who set alerts to "Breaking only" say they still get everything — AP told one reviewer in February 2025 it was "working on" the issue, and reviewers in August 2026 report the identical problem, eighteen months later. Nothing is rewritten or shortened: it's wire copy, one register, for everyone. And the cooperative itself is shrinking — a May 2026 restructuring cut roughly 20 more jobs as AP's newspaper-linked revenue fell 25% over four years while its software/data revenue grew 200% over the same span, and two of its largest member newspaper chains, Gannett and McClatchy, dropped their AP memberships in 2024.
- Pick it if: You want the original wire report, ads and all, from the cooperative that files it, for free.
- Skip it if: The ad load, the notification bugs, or reading wire copy instead of a rewrite is why you're here.
