Tesla Autopilot User Can't Tell If System Was On At Impact

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said August 8 that his Tesla had Autopilot engaged when he crashed near downtown Palo Alto about four weeks earlier. A nine-year Autopilot user, Shanahan cannot determine whether the system malfunctioned or he disengaged it by turning away before impact — a situational-awareness gap built into Level 2 systems that require constant human supervision.
