Tesla Driver Can't Tell If Self-Steering Was On When He Crashed

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said August 8 that his Tesla's driver-assistance feature was on when he crashed near downtown Palo Alto about four weeks earlier. Despite nine years of experience with it, Shanahan cannot tell whether the system failed or he switched it off by turning away just before impact — a confusion common to systems that steer and brake but still need the driver watching the road at all times.
