Nine-Year Tesla Autopilot User Can't Tell If System Was Active At Crash Impact

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan disclosed August 8 that his Tesla had Autopilot engaged when he crashed near downtown Palo Alto roughly four weeks prior. A nine-year Autopilot user, Shanahan said he cannot determine whether the system malfunctioned or he disengaged it by turning around before impact — a situational-awareness gap inherent to Level 2 driver-assistance systems requiring constant human supervision.
