Burnham exempts rape and child sex offenders from early prison release

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has barred people convicted of rape, serious child sexual abuse and grooming offences from early-release sentencing changes in England and Wales, the government said. About 1,000 fewer prisoners will be released early. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp called it Burnham's most important decision as PM — and said he got it wrong.
