Data centres must build their own renewables under Labor's new rules

On 5 August 2026, Labor said new large data centres must build their own renewable energy generation — not buy grid power or certificates. Energy ministers agreed data centres should actively back the renewable transition. It's stricter than the voluntary measures 40 cities, including Melbourne, settled on in June.
