New data centres must build their own renewables under Labor's AI infrastructure rules

On 5 August 2026, the Labor government announced that new large data centres must underwrite and build their own new renewable energy generation — not draw from the grid or buy certificates. Energy ministers agreed data centres must actively support the renewable transition. The requirement is more prescriptive than the cooperative measures 40 cities, including Melbourne, settled on in June.
