New data centres must build their own green power, Labor says

On 5 August 2026, Labor said new large data centres — the warehouse-sized buildings that store digital information — must build their own renewable energy, not just buy it from the grid. Energy ministers agreed the sites should actively support clean power. The rule goes further than the voluntary steps 40 cities, including Melbourne, took in June.
