Inland Revenue staff push back on Labour's GST threshold plan

Labour wants to raise the GST registration threshold from $60,000 to $80,000, removing about 35,000 businesses from the GST system. Deloitte GST specialist Alan Bullot said some Inland Revenue staff argue the threshold should be cut instead, not lifted. He warned the change would shift compliance problems rather than fix them. The threshold has not moved since 2009.
