Neighbouring mayors split over devolved income tax revenue

Conservative Tees Valley Mayor Lord Houchen and Labour North East Mayor Kim McGuinness have divided over newly devolved income tax revenue. BBC Tees reported on 5 August 2026 that Houchen wants to return it to residents as rebates, saying the current model blocks mayors from giving money back. McGuinness plans to invest it in local services.
