Two neighbouring mayors disagree on what to do with new tax money

Mayors can now keep some income tax from their areas. Conservative Tees Valley Mayor Lord Houchen wants to send it back to residents as rebates, BBC Tees reported on 5 August 2026. Labour North East Mayor Kim McGuinness wants to spend it on local services instead.
